Sorry ahead of time for the long post! I’m worried about my toddler with a possible speech delay and maybe ADHD. He’s 23 months and a few days and seems to be having a hard time putting two words together to make a sentence. We think he’s done it a handful of times, but it’s hard to tell because he some of them are word approximations so he’s hard to understand. He will sometimes also use an ASL sign and then say “please” verbally, and I don’t know if that counts or not? He also seems a little lazy (for lack of better term) because he will sometimes use the ASL sign for a word. He knows how to say milk, but sometimes he’ll use the sign instead of saying the word verbally. Teachers have mentioned that he is super quiet at school (he also just moved classrooms and is in there with kids who are bigger than him so that could also have something to do with it previous that they were worried about his speech development). The reason I worry about ADHD is because it seems like he gets distracted in the middle of following my directions. Like I’ll say “go to your room and get a diaper” and he’ll start walking to his room but on the way to his room he might find a toy and start playing with it instead. Or I’ll say “get your shoes and bring them to me” and on the way back he gets distracted playing with his shoes. Sometimes he doesn’t respond to his name, but I’d say about 70% of the time he does respond. He doesn’t respond. He seems to be distracted by a toy or a book or something else (my husband also sometimes doesn’t respond when I call him as well, so I wonder if this is a learned behavior he picked up from dad?). My husband and I are both super ADHD so I know chances are high that he also has it. But I’m worried with him being so young it’ll be misdiagnosed as autism. Idk about autism really because, his so emotional skills are pretty fantastic. Even though he does take my hand and lead me somewhere he usually uses his other hand to point to the object he wants and then he looks back at me to make sure I understand. Or he will look at me and/or my husband, make really solid eye contact and say “hi”or “hug” (usually when it’s nighttime and he’s trying to prolong going to sleep 🤣😂). They also tell me he interacts with kids at school and plays with them and shares toys as well. He also likes to pretend feed his stuffed bear a cookie, or get Buc-ee the beaver to “drink” out of one of his stacking cups. He also likes to be funny and joke around with me and my husband. The only time he ever walks or walks with a wide stance is when he is in a silly mood and is trying to make us laugh, or is being mischievous. He does do repetitive behaviors from time to time, but it’s usually functional play that’s repetitive like getting different toys and sliding them down a slide or turning a Amazon box into a slide if he doesn’t see his regular slide and sliding down that. He also really likes cars and thinks it’s hilarious and tries to copy me when I pretend the car I’m playing with is flying. * edit to add he also pretends the role thing that pops is a vacuum and tries to “vacuum” along with my husband and I when we vacuum the floor. 💕🤣😂 **oh, he also doesn’t really nod yes, but will smile and get excited or sometimes say “Ye”. He’s been shaking his head no for a while though and seems to be in the process of learning the actual word now.

Thank you for reminding me us to be quiet because we sometimes forget that we can overwhelm a child who has to deal with so many stimuli already. We sometimes think we can teach by talking so much so it’s good to remember to be quiet.

Is there an episode on behavioral stuggles (i.e communicating the concept of 'waiting' , redirecting pintching or biting to communicate to a form of nonverbaly l requesting what they need) . My child is in 2nd grade and I struggle with replacing these unwanted behaviors with appropriate ones.

You're a great therapist. I wish more therapist had a focus and guidance in parent couching along with the speech therapy. My son suffered an Anoxic BI at 18 mos. old, then diagnosed with Autism and Apraxia ≈ year later. The journey of speech and language therapy has been cloudy and rather confusing to me as why my son is not verbally communicating and what I should be focusing on to help promote communication. Im tirning to show #403 rn.

i first watched this video a year and a half ago just after my son's first birthday. I went from excited about the future to terrified because he didn't respond to his name and you made a big deal about it. Terrified was good for me because it gave me the kick in the butt i needed to get my mama gears turning for how to help him. We are still waiting on an evaluation. As far as i can tell, he very probably is autistic. He seems to be high functioning so its been really hard for me to find help for us. He generally doesnt qualify for services but only just barely doesnt qualify. Your videos have been a godsend because i am learning how to help him myself. I have been so empowered to learn and do everything i can for him. In fact, its probably thanks to you that ive managed to get him this far! His joint attention is way better. He has started to pretend play. He asked me for a cheese stick when he got hungry! He still doesnt do a great job responding to his name but thats coming along too. Whatever happens at his evaluation will be fine because I know we can do this. We will both be ok. Im excited about the future again and an autism diagnosis cant take that away from me, anymore. Thank you.

I have a three year old recently diagnosed with asd . I would say she has thousands of words but she uses 1-3 sentences when asked . She won’t do back and forth or describe what it was . She has to be prompted . She can use 7plus sentences when she talks to herself or to me ( not all the time ) she talks all day but notices she’s babbling more saying things that don’t make sense . She also repeats me while I am talking but mostly the ending . I noticed this when I had a play date with a friend and she is older then the friends kid by three days . He is able to talk about what he saw or did . We went to the airport and I saw this . She won’t do that , she can engage but she moves on to other stuff . The interest thing she wants my attention all day but it’s brief : mommy eat food , mommy banana please , mommy I am hungry : you have to give her options . I don’t know I am at a loss , I then have my baby (20 months ) who would give me and say help and you do it then she ignores you and you can call her 10 times she won’t answer till you touch her . Generally she doesn’t respond anyway .

Thank you Laura. Now I finally understand why 2 of my 3 kids never liked books. Both language delayed. My daughter finally started liking books after the age of 3. My son is 28 months old, autistic, and I am trying to find ways to help him progress. Thank you for all of your videos Laura. You dont know how helpful you are with all this informative content.

My 2 yr old about to be 3 barley has any words and has been at speech and ot for 10 months now. Does alot of these but i recently had him tested using the ados2 and they said he was not autistic and he has sensory processing disorder. He only has a expressive launguage and speech delay and not receptive. He has problem solving skills delay comapered to a 15 month old. He hasnt hardly made any progress in the 10 months and its really hard wondering why he doesnt want to talk. I have 4 kids and this is the only child i have that is behind. He also used to talk about 10 words at 15 months and he stopped using them. He doesnt even say mama anymore.

What can you say about toddlers who were typically developing until 12 months and then regressed. My son used to imitate gestures (never spontaneous) but stopped slowly over the course of the next year. He is 27 months old now and never imitates gestures. Along with no joint attention etc.

Not sure you will reply. What about toddlers he used to imitate and then stop? My son used to wave, clap, take keys to the door, blow air back at us, stick tongue out back at us. Doesnt want to anymore. Does it mean he lost that skill/regressed?.do we teach him again?

Thanks so much for this video! I have saved it. I suggested this technique to a family in my preschool/childcare and it worked! They used goldfish crackers with the little boy who I suspect is on the autism spectrum and within a week or two, he was turning around and responding to his name.

Maybe it's just me 🤷‍♀️. I do appreciate the video bc I'm trying to see if my granddaughter has these signs bc she has one sign already of walking on the top of her feet/toes, the Dr mentioned it.

Hie Laura. Hope you get to read this. I have a 6 yr old, autistic and non verbal. From last month , she just started to repeat every phrase we try to teach her like thank you, i want some more please, can we play etc. How do we build from this or take advantage of this stage to teach her more? Also is there a way to make her use it appropriately without prompting her? Thank you
